About Us

"Poverty of the Carless" is a real and prevalent issue in our society today. Food deserts and unemployment for many are the direct result of a society that has been built around universal private vehicle access and has left those without this with limited opportunity to escape poverty. This is seen everywhere, and, indeed confirmed in the landmark academic paper “The Poverty of the Carless: Toward Universal Auto Access” by Professors David A. King (Arizona State University), Michael J. Smart (Rutgers University), and Michael Manville (University of California, Los Angeles), which identified that between 1960 and 2014 the U.S. poverty rate fell from 24 percent to 14 percent, but for households without vehicles, the poverty rate rose from 42 percent to 44 percent.

In this new age of mobility, the problem is getting even worse – as the prices of new and used vehicles continue to increase, even lower middle class households are feeling the strain. For poor households, private vehicle ownership is becoming increasingly out of reach. While the push towards electric vehicles and new technologies is good for the planet in the long-term, these efforts only exacerbate the carless problem in the short-term with higher vehicle pricing. For the first time, there is a thriving demand for “gig” driving services and drivers, both delivery and car sharing, in almost every area of the country, making a working motor vehicle an income producing asset.

By combining and working with the new “gig” economy providers in food and merchandise delivery, car sharing, and other, we can provide immediate employment to those who are equipped with vehicles provided by the Drive For Freedom Foundation. In today's society, vehicles are now more than just private transportation – they are truly income producing assets.

The Drive For Freedom Foundation intends to take a rapid and scaled approach to eliminate the “Poverty of the Carless” and drive significant and meaningful positive change for the many impacted by this issue.
